for boys
Professional solutions in the hands of a pediatric urologist and pediatric anesthesiologist in a private facility environment.
About the procedure
A hydrocele — commonly known as a water hernia — is a condition of the testicle in boys where the contents of the scrotum enlarge due to an excessive accumulation of fluid.
It is a condition that is not only aesthetically disruptive but also functionally limiting. The affected testicle is swollen, and the skin of the scrotum may be taut. A larger hydrocele can interfere with walking and cause visible enlargement in the groin area, which can be a source of uncomfortable embarrassment for the boy. The solution is a surgical procedure.
Furthermore, a hydrocele disrupts the nutrition of the testicle, which can adversely affect the production of male hormones and sperm formation in the long term.
Diagnosis includes a physical examination by palpation, a sonographic examination of the scrotum, and, in indicated cases, the determination of tumor markers. It is necessary to distinguish a hydrocele from a testicular tumor or inflammation. In boys, the hydrocele sac usually communicates with the abdominal cavity — this condition is referred to as a communicating hydrocele.
Hydrocele surgery in boys differs from the same procedure in adults; therefore, it is appropriate for it to be performed by a pediatric urologist. During the procedure, the hydrocele sac is removed along with the communicating canal and fluid through resection and adjustment of the testicular tunics. The procedure takes place under general anesthesia and typically lasts 15 to 30 minutes. The child goes home on the day of the surgery — hospitalization is not required. After the procedure, the testicle is fully functional, and its size normalizes within 3 weeks to 3 months. The aesthetic result of the surgery is favorable.
Before the surgery, it is essential to undergo a pediatric preoperative examination with a pediatrician. We use exclusively self-absorbable material for suturing — therefore, suture removal is not necessary.
The surgery is performed by MUDr. Michal Polák, an experienced pediatric urologist, in collaboration with MUDr. Milan Gajdoš, MPH, a urologist with more than 30 years of professional practice. Anesthesia is provided by an experienced pediatric anesthesiologist. Our private facility guarantees the highest quality of materials used and strict adherence to hygiene standards. Unlike a hospital environment, you come into contact with a minimal number of people, ensuring full discretion. We guarantee an individual and empathetic approach to every child and their parents, continuous availability of the attending physician during the stay, and the possibility of telephone consultation 24 hours a day even after discharge home — until full recovery.
If you are planning for this surgery, please first book a consultation prior to surgery under general anesthesia.
