What is an undescended testicle?

During intrauterine development, the testicles form in the abdominal cavity and gradually migrate through the inguinal canal into the scrotum during pregnancy. The scrotum plays an indispensable role — it maintains the temperature of the testicles 4 °C lower than body temperature, which is an essential condition for the proper maturation of male germ cells. Cryptorchidism, i.e., the failure of one or both testicles to descend into the scrotum, is one of the most common congenital male genital disorders and occurs in 0.8% of boys. A higher frequency is observed in premature babies. Surgical intervention is the solution to this condition.

What risks does an undescended testicle pose?

This is a developmental defect that increases the risk of tumor formation in the affected testicle and can adversely affect future fertility. The condition has several forms — the testicle may remain in the abdominal cavity and not be palpable during physical examination, or its descent may stop anywhere along the path between the abdominal cavity and the scrotum. If it gets stuck in the groin or in the space above the scrotum, it is usually palpable. A special case is anorchia — the complete absence of a testicle caused by damage during prenatal development.

How is undescended testicle surgery performed?

For a palpable undescended testicle, we perform orchiopexy — a surgery aimed at preserving the vitality of the testicle and placing it in the correct position in the scrotum. This procedure is possible provided that the testicle is viable, identifiable, and has a sufficiently long vascular pedicle. In cases where the testicle is significantly damaged or abnormally developed, it is more appropriate to remove the affected tissue. To eliminate the aesthetic and psychological impact of testicle loss, a silicone implant mimicking the natural shape and size can be used after puberty. In situations where the testicle is palpable in the scrotum but more often found in the inguinal canal, we speak of testis mobilis — in this case, as well as after testicular torsion, we indicate orchiofixation.

When is surgery necessary?

The optimal timing for undescended testicle surgery is between 12 and 18 months of age. If the congenital defect is detected later, surgery is still indicated — the sooner the procedure is performed, the more effectively the risk of testicular developmental disorder, damage to sperm production, and the risk of malignant transformation are minimized.

Who performs the surgery and our standards

The procedure is personally performed by MUDr. Michal Polák, an experienced pediatric urologist, together with MUDr. Milan Gajdoš, MPH, a urologist with over 30 years of practice. Both have extensive experience with surgeries in pediatric patients.
Anesthesia is provided by an experienced pediatric anesthesiologist with many years of practice in a pediatric university hospital. The presence of parents throughout their stay in our facility is welcome and self-evident. After the surgery, the child goes home accompanied by parents on the same day — a hospital stay is not required.
Our outpatient surgery center in Bratislava guarantees the highest quality materials, strict hygiene standards, and full discretion — unlike a hospital environment, you come into contact with significantly fewer people. Every child and their parents can count on an individual and empathetic approach, continuous presence of a doctor during their stay, and availability of telephone consultation 24 hours a day even after discharge home — until full recovery.
If you are preparing for this surgery, please first schedule a consultation before surgery under general anesthesia.
