Surgical Treatment
for Urinary Incontinence

We perform 100 such procedures per year.

About the procedure

Urinary incontinence in women is the involuntary leakage of urine, which makes everyday life more difficult for patients in terms of hygiene and social activities. Although it is not a life-threatening condition, it can be a source of long-term psychological burden and significantly reduce quality of life.

At our clinic, we will help you choose the most suitable treatment option—either a surgical solution in the form of transobturator tape (T.O.T.) implantation or non-invasive laser therapy.

Types of incontinence by symptoms:

  • Urge incontinence — a sudden, strong urge to urinate accompanied by uncontrollable leakage of a larger volume of urine.
  • Stress incontinence — urine leakage triggered by physical exertion such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or lifting; the cause is often weakening of the pelvic floor after childbirth, surgery, or nerve damage.
  • Mixed and other forms — a combination of urge and stress incontinence or less common types, such as overflow incontinence.

Grades of incontinence

  • Grade 1: occasional leakage of drops of urine when sneezing, laughing, or lifting a load, at most twice a day.
  • Grade 2: more frequent leakage in a stream during normal physical activities such as walking or running.
  • Grade 3: continuous urine leakage throughout the day and night, even with minimal effort.

Laser treatment of urinary incontinence

Our facility is a reference center for laser therapy for incontinence in Slovakia. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis—without the need for a hospital stay, without pain—and is suitable for women who, for any reason, cannot or do not wish to undergo surgery.

Course of laser treatment:
One session takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and does not require hospitalization. The principle is photothermal tightening of the vaginal mucosa and activation of collagen production in the connective tissue system around the urethra, thereby restoring its support and reducing urine leakage.

The treatment is safe and effective. In addition, it has beneficial side effects: it revitalizes vaginal tissue, improves moisture during intimate intercourse, and strengthens local immunity, thereby reducing the risk of recurrent vaginal infections. The procedure is painless, bloodless, without incisions or stitches.

Treatment results:
In women with mild stress incontinence, we achieve effectiveness of up to 94% with the use of 1 to 2 pads per day. In mixed incontinence, effectiveness remains significant—around 68%—and results further improve when combined with pharmacological treatment.

All procedures—both laser and surgical—are performed by our physicians, specialists in incontinence medicine. Our portfolio includes more than 6,000 successfully resolved cases, including complex and difficult-to-treat forms of incontinence.

Surgical treatment of stress incontinence using a sling (T.O.T.)

In addition to laser therapy, our facility also offers a surgical solution for more severe grades of stress incontinence. Each patient undergoes thorough diagnostics and an individual treatment plan is prepared, taking into account her wishes, age, associated conditions, and the specific type and grade of incontinence.

For 2. 2nd and 3rd degree incontinence, surgery is usually the most effective solution. In advanced cases, when a patient uses a significant number of pads, laser treatment typically does not achieve a sufficient effect. Our goal is always to propose a realistic and effective solution tailored to each patient’s health status and expectations.

Course of surgery:
The surgical procedure requires short-term hospitalization of up to 24 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, the patient undergoes precise diagnostics, based on which the most appropriate surgical approach is selected.

We recommend the procedure for women with urine leakage when coughing, laughing, running, or during other physical activity, with a significant need to wear pads, and in good overall health. After completing preoperative internal medicine and anesthesiology examinations, we perform the procedure itself, which takes 20 to 30 minutes. We use the certified ARIS suburethral sling from the renowned European manufacturer COLOPLAST.

Postoperative period:
After surgery, two small scars (approx. 1 cm) remain in the skin fold between the thigh and the pubic area, and one scar (approx. 2 cm) on the anterior vaginal wall. Healing usually proceeds without complications—after a few months, the scars are practically invisible. The patient goes home within 24 hours after the procedure and can usually return to work after a week. We recommend avoiding lifting heavy loads for 3 months and sexual abstinence for 4 weeks.
We recommend at least 3 months of rest, without lifting heavy loads, and 4 weeks of sexual abstinence.

Result:
Urine leakage usually resolves immediately after surgery. In the first weeks, the patient may feel mild tension at the surgical wound sites, which usually disappears within two months.

If you are planning to undergo surgery, please book a preoperative consultation for surgery under general anesthesia first.
